Disposable Worlds
Beginning with the question, “What if the world of the future was a result of the current Anthropocene reaching its penultimate conclusion?” I imagine an uninhabitable world devoid of life and consisting only of non-biodegradable materials left behind after humanity has depleted all existing natural resources. The specific materials are referred to as “disposable”, but in fact they are never truly gone and will outlast all of us. Working with some of the most fundamental and ubiquitous of these discarded materials, such as plastic and Styrofoam, I fabricate sculptural models of simulated representational landscapes and imaginary other worlds. These stark and foreboding images become a meditation on our personal relationship with our culture and the natural world. Consequently, my process is slow and deliberate acting as a catharsis to help relieve my anxiety about this distant but possible future. I am well aware that my own participation in a wasteful society produces an endless stream of detritus that could ultimately lead to our collective demise.
This is an ongoing series still in its earliest stages. Each photograph has taken several months and up to a year or more to build, light and photograph. More work will be added over the coming months and years. I like to take my time to get things right.
