Artist’s Statement
My recent work in photography, video and installation explores the complex relationship between self, nature and the artifacts and infrastructure of industrialized civilization. Using long time frames across the seasons, I observe and document the contrast between organic natural processes of growth and decay within the strict geometric forms of our technological infrastructure. Issues of permanence, entropy, obsolescence, and the impulse to control and sanitize are contrasted with the regenerative power and cyclical structure of nature. Experiencing these artifacts within the context of landscape and memory becomes a metaphor for the individual’s metaphysical relationship with the natural world. The use of symmetrical and circular compositions and rhythmic patterns invoke symbolic sacred art from various cultures and time periods, inducing a meditative state to encourage contemplation about the viewer’s own relationship to time, nature and mortality.
